The Swift Water Rescue Team was formed in 2001, and has twenty one personnel that have been trained in Swiftwater Rescue, Boat Operations, High Angel Rescue, Hazardous Material, Incident Command System, and Emergency Medicine.  All team members must pass a swim test annually, and new members must pass a swim test prior to going to class.

We are one of five state sponsored Swift Water Rescue teams that fall under the Alabama Mutual Aid System (AMAS).  If needed, we are able to respond to anywhere in the state and surrounding states in a matter of hours, as we did in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

During Hurricane Katrina the team deployed to Mobile, Alabama and Waveland, Mississippi.  The team was attached to Virginia Task Force 1 (USAR Team) and Maryland Task Force 1 (USAR Team) and conducted rescue operations for nine days.

In the event another hurricane threatens the gulf coast, the team will deploy prior to the storm making land fall near the coast and immediately after the storm passes, the team will begin rescue operations.

The team has deployed several times since its inception:

May 2003 – Trussville, Alabama

July 2004 – Leeds, Alabama

October 2004 – Homewood, Alabama (Hurricane Ivan)

August 2005 - Mobile, Alabama and Waveland, Mississippi (Hurricane Katrina)

September 2005 – Birmingham, Alabama

November 2005 – Vestavia, Alabama
