The Trussville Fire and Rescue Decontamination Units are an integral part of the Hazardous Material Response team. All the Hazardous Material Technicians, plus responders trained in hazardous awareness and operations are capable of decontamination procedures.
In addition to equipment carried on the Hazardous Material Truck, the Decontamination Units consist of two trailers, one 12’ single axle and one 16’ tandem axle. These units are all self contained with AC electrical power, shower tents, water containment systems (both shower and recovery) and chemical cleaners for both patient/victims and equipment. The team has capabilities to handle initial medical treatment and can decontaminate patients on backboards with the use of a roller conveyor system.
Water sources from hydrants, fire engines, or a portable 400 gallon water buffalo can
be used by the team, for cleaning purposes.
If the combined deployment of all Decontamination Units is necessary several hundred patient/victims can be handled on the scene of a biological or radiological emergency.
